Dear Mr. Dad: A few months ago, you recommended that expectant and new dads consider getting a flu vaccine. Well, with a toddler and a pregnant wife (who’s due in just a few weeks), life got busy and we never got around to getting vaccinated. At this point, is it still worth getting the shot? And if so, who should get it?

A: According to Dr. Sal Giorgianni, co-founder and vice-president of Healthy Men, Inc., healthcare professionals around the country are getting the same question from their patients: Is getting vaccinated for flu in January or February still helpful or is it too late in the season to make a difference? The answer is simple: It’s definitely not too late to vaccinate; Flu season is still here and by all measures it’s in full swing. While you generally won’t reach maximum immunity until about 14 days after getting the shot, your immunity actually begins to build within a few days of receiving a flu jab. Even that early protection will reduce the likelihood that you’ll develop a severe case of the flu or need to be hospitalized—or that you’ll infect anyone else around you.
